The surface energy of MgO
نویسندگان
چکیده
The surface energy of MgO is determined using experimental data collected from equilibrated thermal grooves circumscribing island grains. Local equilibrium assumptions at each groove require that the Herring equations be satisfied at each data site, thereby yielding a large and overdetermined system of equations involving the surface energy γ. This inverse problem is then solved using a new technique that is statistical in nature and multiscale in implementation. The resulting discrete solution represents a statistically significant representation of the surface energy of MgO as a function of surface orientation. Comparisons to results derived from a more traditional approach, along with suggested further applications, are discussed. ∗Research supported by NSF DMS-0072194, NSF DMS-9805582, and the MRSEC Program under NSF DMR0079996.

Abstract: Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were coated with MgO nano particles using simple precipitationmethod. The growth of Mg(OH)2particles was controlled by adjusting the alkaline concentration, salt concentrationand feed rate in simple precipitation method. The nanometer-sized Mg(OH)2particles were precipitated on the surfaceof functionalized MWCNTs by reaction between MgSO4 solution...
متن کاملInvestigations of Calcium Aluminate Slag Penetration to MgO Monolithic Refractories in Steelmaking Process
In this study, slag penetration into a magnesia refractory monolithic was investigated by the crucible test method. A synthetic calcium aluminate slag system has been used to study commercial magnesia mix refractory for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 hours at 1450°C and 1600°C. It has been shown that the penetration rate is controlled by a diffusion mechanism at 1450°C. In this case, capillaries are the ...
